Being Mum in front of the camera.

23. Have (updated) professional family photos done (Completed September 21, 2014)

This was a goal I was both excited about ticking off, but also dreading.

I was one of those mothers.  I was going to lose weight and have photos!  Except instead of losing weight, the number on the scale was going up.  And I realised that if I waited until I lost weight, I was never going to have photos of my family that included me.  Because despite the fact that I take photos of families for a living, and despite the fact I am constantly telling mothers to get in to photos with their children - I did not practice what I would preach.

I cried when I went shopping for an outfit.  I came home empty handed and frustrated and in a very self depreciating mood.  Ty hid from me.  It wasn't a fun experience for either of us!  I went back without him.  I went back in to one shop, decided I wanted something in navy blue, and set myself the task.  I didn't look for long.  The first thing that looked ok was what I got.  Turns out, I rather love that dress.  It's pretty, it's comfortable, and it doesn't cling to my fat rolls.  Fingers crossed, Gina.  Hope for the best.

Still, right up until I actually got there?  I wanted to cancel that shoot.  I made up many excuses in my head as to how I could put it off until I lost that weight.  For the record, if I did, I'd still be waiting.  And our photographer was not going to let me out of it - she knew exactly where my head was.

Mandii from Xanthe Photography is my kind of person - fun, silly, natural.  We've developed a friendship through our love of photography, and I am so grateful to have her in my life.  She was having none of my self-hate.  And despite not loving myself very much, I trusted her.  And she was great.  And she is amazing at what she does.  And I am so in love with our family photos.  We now have 2 beautiful canvases hung in our lounge room - a family portrait, and one of our 3 gorgeous kids with their favourite soft toys.  I am soon to create a photobook displaying my 60 favourite images.  And I 100% LOVE showing our photos to people, and absolutely do not care what people think of me in these photos.  Because they are so beautiful, and they are so us.  And they make me SO happy.

And here's the thing.  I surprised myself.  The first image that Mandii gave us a sneak peak of made me cry.  Me and my baby boy.  Not "OMG look at how awful I look", but "OMG I finally have a stunning photo of me and my Memphis".  And it is.  And I actually kinda love myself in it.  I look at it and think wow, he's so tiny yet suddenly not so tiny.  Look at his cheeky grin and those little fingers.  Those beautiful big eyes.  And look at me.  It's nothing to do with the fact that I  actually don't look that fat and everything to do with the fact that I look HAPPY.  That's me and my baby.  (The colour version is amazeballs, by the way... I've attached it further down!)

The first image I saw from our shoot.

All of our images captured our family exactly as we are.  Silly, cheeky, fun.  The kids had fun, and were able to explore.  Ty and I were comfortable.  The end result is a beautiful gallery full of happy photos.  So many people have made comment on how happy we look.  How much fun we must have had.  And fancy that, not one person has commented about my weight.  I've had nothing but positive comments.  And sure I still need to lose weight, but I needed to have these photos more.  It wasn't really about waiting for me to lose weight, in the end.  It was capturing my family as it is now.  Young, fun, silly.  Memphis just before he turns 1, Zavian as his cheeky 3 year old self, and Lexi, our 5 year old school girl.  Still in those stages of innocence that seem to evaporate far too early these days.

I needed these photos as much for the kids as I did for me.  They'll look back on photos I myself have taken, sure, and there are many many many images of the 3 of them and also a lot of them with their Daddy.  But images with Mummy are sparse because I hide behind the camera.  Ty rarely takes photos of me with the kids and a lot of the photos of me with them are selfies from a camera phone.  So now they have beautiful images.  Images that they will look back on and say hey look, there's my mum.  I can pretty much guarantee they'll be looking at our family and how happy we are.  And that they won't give a rats ass about the size of my body.

Go and have photos taken with your children.  Every child needs a beautiful photo with their mum.  But more than that, every mum needs one with her children.  Lucky for me, I now have quite a few.

Almost five...

I know a little princess, she is almost five.
She is my darling little girl, and I cannot believe how fast 5 years seems to have passed us by.
She is beautiful, cheeky and has a wonderful imagination.
She loves to dance, sing and perform.
Her 'Birthday Month Photo-A-Day' begins on Sunday (1st of June).
I am also aiming to get her a collection of photos done to celebrate her 5th birthday.
Stunning, isn't she?

Project Memphis - 26 weeks / 6 months old

My sweet 6 month old <3
It is amazing how in the blink of an eye (or so it seems), that 6 months passes you by.
But it has.  6 months since our precious little Memphis came, 6 months ago we were sitting by his side in hospital not knowing what was going on.
I can't believe the difference 6 months makes.  From my tiny 1.9kg fighter, to my 5.5kg snuggle bug.  It's been a blur, but I enjoy him so much.

Always laughing <3

Memphis is a beautiful baby.  Of my three, he has by far been the easiest.  Partially due to being old-pat at this parenting babies and toddlers gig, but mostly because he is an incredibly content and placid boy.  He is happy, cheeky and 'talkative'.  He is starting to play coy, and he is a Mummy's boy.  He adores his older siblings.  He loves Daddy tickling him.

At six months old Memphis is in 5.5kg and 60cm long.  He is in a size 000 clothing, although does fit some 0000 separates, although I sat in his room recently with quiet tears as I put away those preemie, 5x0 and 4x0 clothing for the very last time.  Looking at the tiniest of his suits - Tiny Prem sizing - and wondering if he was ever that small.
We sat in the hospital waiting room the other day waiting for the heart specialist and a beautiful, tiny baby girl was beside us and I couldn't help but just look at her and marvel in her teeny tiny little features.  When I asked how big she was, I expected them to say around 2kg, she looked about as big as Memphis was born - I was sure of it! But she was in fact 3kg.  How could I forget so soon that he was ever that teeny tiny?  He was just so small!

Project Memphis continues along.  I enjoy this project - and I am keeping his outfits in his memory box (ok, random basket... I really need something a bit bigger and more box-like haha).  It's amazing to see how he's grown, and each time becomes more challenging as he does.not.like to sit or lay still.  He wiggles over his change table and everything is a distraction!  And the photo?  Well that is definitely a toy.  Or food.  Or both!  But it's fun and I'm glad I did it.  I stretched this photo out an extra 2 weeks to take us right on 6 months.

I love this child with every inch of my being.  He has the sweetest little features.  His little button nose, and those sweet little lips.  He sucks in that bottom lip all the time, too.  His big blue eyes are curious, and forever following me around.  He loves the camera.  He loves to smile, and laugh. Our breastfeeding journey continues and he is as much a 'booby boy' as ever, something I felt I've fought very hard for.  He is cuddly, affectionate and quite simply put, wonderful.

There is little more I could put in to words about Memphis, so enjoy some pictures from this last week(ish).

Food is a new thing around here!
Another new thing - the jolly jumper.  He LOVES it!

Project Memphis - 20 weeks

Project Memphis is definitely well under way!

Here is our 20 week photo, our 5th in the series!  I can't believe he is 20 weeks already!
At the moment we are keeping the photos in a cheap little photo album, but once this project is complete I think I'd like to make a really nice photo book out of it!

This is getting harder to do as he is going through a stage where e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g goes in to his mouth!  So he tried to eat the photo.  At least 4 times ;)

Canvas of my own (2)

#2 - Print an image of mine to canvas

I take a lot of photos.
My kids can barely move without me shoving a camera in their face.  Yet, we have (had!) only one canvas in the house.  An image of Ty and I with the older two taken by someone else.
I have never actually printed an image of my own to canvas.

We don't have a lot of room for large canvas, the one we have in the lounge is huge, and well, we couldn't go much bigger!  We also rent so if I have to resort to using 3M hooks (which are shit in the heat I might add), I'd rather just have something lightweight - so small.

Using 123Cheese Photobooks, I ordered my first canvas - a happy, colourful picture of Memphis.  Smiling away in a bucket (he WAS meant to be asleep!)
I printed a 30x40cm canvas and I am really happy with it!  My new aim, by Christmas, is to have another canvas printed, slightly larger, of all three kids.  That is, if they let me get a decent photo (famous last words!!!!)

Australia Zoo (51)

51 - Take the kids to a zoo they haven't been to.

Oh my gosh we did this in JANUARY!  I am really rubbish at keeping this updated aren't I!!!  I have a few I really need to get crossed off of the list as they are complete (for instance my Penguin encounter... OVER A YEAR AGO.... ok I'll do that this week - I say now :P)

Zoo's.
I love going to the zoo.  Have since a child.  My fondest zoo memories was a camp when I was 10 in New Zealand where our class went to see The Lion King (wow... that movie has been out 27 years!) and then we went to Wellington Zoo where we spent the night in a giant hall!  I still remember the sounds of lions roaring as we were all trying (pretending?) to nod off to sleep.

My three - chillin' with the Irwin's

Australia Zoo is on the Sushine Coast and conveniently located up the road from Ty's Godfathers house.  We headed up to visit rellies and chucked in a visit for our little family of 5.
We loved it!  Alexis and Zavian are at an age where that sort of experience is awesome to them.  They enjoyed seeing crocodiles and alligators, camels, tigers, koalas, kangaroos and a variety of other animals.  Both of them (and us!) enjoyed the hands on experiences with keepers who walked around with a variety of creatures.  Zavian was able to somewhat conquer his fear of scaley things!  He patted a snake, and hesitantly stood beside a baby alligator!
Lexi enjoyed every animal that she was able to touch but was particularly thrilled by being able to hand feed kangaroos and pose for photos with them!
Memphis even got to have a photo laying on a snake!!!

The only thing I was sad about was the fact there were no elephants.  Years ago I went and actually hand fed an elephant - amazing.  The three they had were the oldest in captivity in Australia.  Last year two of the three passed, so they moved the remaining elephant to her private land where she roams her final months/years without being in the public eye.  As much as I wanted to have a picture of Memphis and an elephant, I must say I am glad she is where she is.

Lexi says Hello to a blue tongue lizard

What else do you go for!?
Lexi was so excited to pat a koala!
